Barbara Willis Terrene Pottery Lidded Box c. 1949
A fine example of Barbara Willis' Terrene Pottery for your collection. Important Potter, Extraordinary Woman, Barbara Willis (1917-2011) holds a special place in the hearts of many, including pottery collectors, especially Californians. Her vintage pottery pieces called "Terrene" (meaning "of the earth") are increasingly sought after by her admirers as well as her contemporary pieces that she later created during her "second go round" of success in the pottery business. She exhibited her contemporary, press-molded bowls, vases, necklaces, chargers, etc. for many years at the Los Angeles Pottery show until right before her death in 2011. Her space at the event was a show stopper. Attendees were eager to visit her there every year. She was presented the "Living Legend" award at the show in 2006. How ironic that while she was exhibiting her contemporary line from the early 21st century, the other vendors at the show offered designs from her vintage lines from the mid 20th century. Her name was and still is prominent in the halls of the LA Pottery Show. This Terrene box was originally created to be used as a ciagarette box to match an ashtray of the same design. It has an in-mold signature mark from c. 1949. The box has the popular crackle glaze that was prominent in many of her pieces that she designed that have an almost primitive, but so modern look to them. When you read about Barbara Willis and learn of her life's accomplishments, you'll too understand the attachment that so many have to her work. She was part of the California Modernism Movement and was a Student of Andreson. Jack Chipman wrote a book about Barbara Willis titled "Classic California Modernism" that was published in 2003. I've included a photo of page 42 of that book where this box is listed. Other books where she is mentioned are: - California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism, by Bill Stern - copyright 2001 - Two books by Jack Chipman, California Pottery Scrapbook and Collectors Encyclopedia of California Pottery. (see photo in this listing where this box is displayed in the book; book not included in sale) Measures 8" square and is in excellent, vintage condition.

FLOS Lighting Can Can Mini Pendant Light
Design by Marcel Wanders, 2010 By FLOS. The Can Can Mini Pendant Light is a smaller scale version of Marcel Wanders' Can Can Pendant and features the same recognizably sophisticated and decorative diffuser. A lamp with a dual personality, Can Can's clean, linear shape acts as the container for a decorative effect. Like many of Marcel Wanders creations, Can Can melds together simple classic forms with features that draw on tradition. From a distance, Can Can introduces itself as a lamp with a stern design that unexpectedly, when seen close up, reveals a floral decoration that filters the light as it is diffused. Delicate and unpredictable, the beam is broken by the polycarbonate decorative flourish to create an ever changing fabric of light. Shown in black. Dimensions

Rudi Stern for George Kovacs Neon Floor Lamp
A torchiere floor lamp designed for George Kovacs by well known artist Rudi Stern and furniture designer Don Chelsea. Stern almost single handedly brought back the glam factor of neon lighting in the 1970s with his bold modern approach to the medium. Chelsea's perchance for clean features of his furniture design shows off in this simplified and angular piece. The visionary style this lamp exudes from the 1970's is the precursor that led the way to the geometric boldness of the 1980's. Both Stern and Chelsea are recognized as renowned artisans in the world of high end design. This lamp features a blue neon tube wrapping around two sides of a powder coated metal frame and has two lighting options. There is a on-off switch for the neon light and a dimmer switch for the torchiere. The lamp is both an illumination and a statement in minimalist format.
